The figure comes from the meeting of two branches, giving the surface its distinctive interplay of patterns. Along the sculpted sidewall, layers of grain rise in broad arcs to form a crest beneath the rim. Its low, open silhouette lets that movement take center stage. This is a piece that invites your eye to follow the grain, then circle back and discover it anew.

Why This Piece Is Exceptional

Expressive crotch figure — grain formed where two branches developed, creating the distinctive composition across the interior

Paired rounded grain patterns — two flowing fields linked through the center, giving the top view a natural rhythm

Cresting side grain — layered curves sweep upward across the exterior in broad, rising arcs

Sculpted sidewall — shaped to reveal the layered grain and make the side view a discovery of its own

Low, open silhouette — a broad rim and gently rising sides display the figure without competing with it

One-of-a-kind — this particular meeting of grain and form belongs to a single Black Walnut artwork by Ben Balzer

Dimensions & Details

Diameter: 11.9″ (30.1 cm)

Height: 2.9″ (7.3 cm)

Depth: 1.8″ (4.5 cm)

Weight: 1.7 lbs (776 g)

Item: 11125

Artist: Ben Balzer

Completion Date: 2026

Collector Notes

The flowing interior figure and cresting side grain make this bowl ideal for:

gallery or studio display

living room or entry table centerpieces

curated shelf or sideboard styling

a distinctive, considered gift for a collector of wood art

contemporary or transitional interiors

Give the piece a setting where both the interior and the sculpted side remain visible.
