The bowl on your table did not begin in this studio. It began as a search.
Before any piece of wood is shaped in Talking Wood Studio's workshop in the foothills of Georgia's Blue Ridge Mountains, it passes through one of the most selective material processes in American woodturning. Every month, we evaluate hundreds of pieces of kiln-dried hardwood from a network of sources built over years and spanning multiple continents. We reject more than 99% of them.
The one piece we do select becomes a sculpture. One of one. Never repeated.
This is what wood provenance means at Talking Wood Studio: the documented story of where a piece of wood came from, what made it rare, and why it was chosen above everything else we walked past.
The Search Comes First
Our material library does not come from a single supplier or a standard catalog. We have spent years developing a network of sources — domestic and international — specifically to access the category of kiln-dried hardwood that most makers never see: wood with exceptional figure, unusual color, dramatic spalting, or chatoyant shimmer that commercial buyers consistently overlook.
We are not in the business of salvage. We are not rescuing a fallen tree because it needs to be rescued. We are searching for what we call the diamond in the rough — a piece of wood that already carries within its grain something rare and beautiful, waiting to be revealed. The distinction matters. Our selectivity is not sentiment toward wood. It is a commitment to the collector who will ultimately live with the piece.
Each month, we pass on more than 99 out of every 100 pieces we examine. Most fall short on multiple counts — limiting dimensions, defects that cannot be worked around, a figure that fails to hold up at scale, or grain that simply has nothing to say. We move on. When we find the piece that earns its place — whatever the reason — we acquire it.
Every piece we select is individually curated. There is no batch buying. There is no "close enough." Each block is a decision in itself.
What We Are Looking For
The qualities that make a piece of wood exceptional are specific, and years of looking have made us precise about what they are.
Chatoyance. The optical phenomenon that gives certain figured woods a holographic, three-dimensional shimmer as light moves across the surface. Quilted maple, pomelle sapele, and etimoe display it at their finest. A piece with strong chatoyance appears to glow from within — the surface changes as you move around it.
Figure. Figure refers to the visual patterns created by irregular grain orientation, the result of unusual growth conditions in the tree itself. Flame figure produces a rippling, wavy effect. Quilted or blister figure creates a puckered, three-dimensional surface. Pomelle figure forms tight, bubble-like clusters across the face. Fiddleback figure — named for its traditional use in violin backs — produces a narrow, rapid wave pattern that runs fine and consistent. All of these become dramatically more visible once the oil finish is applied and the wood's depth opens up.
Spalting. Spalting occurs when fungi begin to colonize a log after it falls, producing dark zone lines and sometimes vivid color shifts through the wood. Controlled spalting in a piece of figured maple, for example, creates a combination of grain movement and fungal artistry that cannot be manufactured or repeated. Two spalt patterns are never the same.
Color and Contrast. Some species carry dramatic natural contrast between heartwood and sapwood — the dark chocolate interior of black walnut against its pale cream edge, or the greenish heartwood of magnolia against its creamy outer layer. In a large bowl, that transition becomes a design element as deliberate as anything a designer could specify.
Presence at Scale. Kiln-dried hardwood over twelve inches in diameter and thick enough for a deep bowl form is genuinely scarce. Most large blanks carry defects — checks, voids, inclusions — that limit what they can become. When we find a large, structurally clean piece with a grain pattern that carries authority across its full face, that combination is its own form of rarity. Not every piece we select announces itself through exotic figure. Some earn their place through the simple, uncommon fact of being exactly what they are — honest, well-defined grain at a size and quality that the market rarely produces.
The Woods We Work With
Our species list grows as our sourcing network grows. We are always looking for the next wood that will do something we have not seen before — a species with a visual character that justifies the search. Below are the hardwoods we have worked with to date, drawn from across the United States and around the world.
Spalted Flame Maple (Big Leaf Maple) — Grown in the Pacific Northwest, Big Leaf Maple is the primary source of figured maple in American woodturning. When flame figure and spalting occur in the same blank — as they do in our finest maple pieces — the result is a combination of rippling grain movement and dark fungal zone lines that gives each bowl its own abstract composition. The grain sweeps across the surface like a weather pattern caught in wood.
Pomelle Sapele — A variant of the sapele species native to West Africa in which the grain forms tight, interlocking bubbles across the face. In direct light, pomelle sapele expands and contracts as the viewing angle changes. The chatoyance is among the strongest of any hardwood species we work with, and the color — warm golden-brown — deepens considerably under a Tung oil finish.
Ribbon Sapele — Quartersawing standard sapele produces a ribbon figure: alternating bands of light and dark that run in parallel across the surface, precise and graphic where pomelle is organic. In a large bowl, ribbon sapele creates a strata effect — a sense of geological layering and depth.
Etimoe (Copaifera salikounda) — Also known as African Rosewood, etimoe originates in West Africa and produces a warm reddish-brown heartwood, sometimes marked with darker streaks, against a pale yellow sapwood. Many pieces display a curly fiddleback grain pattern that runs fine and rapid across the surface, and chatoyance is frequently present. Its density and color give finished pieces a visual weight that photographs do not fully capture.
Zebrawood — One of the most visually distinctive tropical hardwoods available. When quartersawn, zebrawood produces dark brown stripes over a pale yellow-gold ground. The stripes are not uniform — they shift in width and spacing across each piece — making zebrawood recognizable as a species while ensuring no two bowls are ever the same. It originates in West and Central Africa.
London Plane — Quartersawing London plane reveals a lace-like ray fleck pattern sometimes called lacewood: an intricate network of rounded ray cells that produces a geometric, almost textile-like surface across the face of the bowl. The effect is quieter than flame figure — more architecture than weather — but unmistakable once seen.
Black Walnut — The benchmark American hardwood. Black walnut's heartwood ranges from pale brown to near-black chocolate, occasionally with figured grain that adds movement to its already-substantial depth of color. In large bowl forms, walnut's warmth under oil finish gives it a presence that does not require unusual figure to be compelling. It is the wood that is exactly what it appears to be.
Quilted Maple — When maple develops a quilted figure, the surface appears to bulge in three dimensions: blister-like undulations running across the face of the wood, each catching the light differently from a slightly different angle. In direct light, a quilted maple bowl appears to shift in depth as you move around it. The effect is subtle but persistent.
Magnolia — An American hardwood that receives far less attention than its character deserves. Magnolia's sapwood is creamy white; its heartwood runs from greenish-yellow to tan. In bowls that include both, the transition between the two tones becomes a defining visual element — a color shift that no two pieces produce in the same location or proportion.
Black Limba (Terminalia superba) — A West African hardwood also known as Afara or Korina, Black Limba carries a warm, creamy to pale yellow-brown ground tone frequently marked by dark mineral streaks that run through the heartwood in irregular, graphic patterns. It is the contrast between the pale field and the dark figuring that gives the species its character — quiet wood interrupted by something emphatic. The grain is typically straight to gently interlocked, and the surface finishes to a smooth, even quality that allows the streaking to read clearly without competition. Among turners, it remains underused relative to its visual interest.
Bubinga (Guibourtia spp.) — A Central and West African hardwood that arrives in several distinct visual personalities depending on the tree and how the blank is cut. The base color runs from pink-red to deep reddish-brown, often with fine, dark purple-red veining running through the heartwood. Quartersawn bubinga can produce a strong pomelle or waterfall figure, and when it does, the combination of dramatic color and three-dimensional grain movement places it among the most visually commanding hardwoods available. Finished with oil, the depth of color intensifies considerably. Dense, stable, and heavy in the hand, a large bubinga bowl has a presence that is immediately apparent before the figure is even assessed.
Canary Wood (Centrolobium spp.) — Also known as Amarillo or Putumuju, Canary Wood originates in South America and takes its common name from its most distinctive attribute: a vivid yellow to golden-orange heartwood that is unlike the color field of almost any other temperate hardwood. The yellow ground is frequently interrupted by red-orange to dark brown streaks that vary in width and density across the face, creating a natural contrast that requires no finishing enhancement to read. The grain is typically straight to slightly interlocked. As the wood ages and is exposed to light, the yellow tones shift toward a warm honey-amber, giving pieces a color trajectory that develops over years in a home.
We are actively adding to this list. New species enter our studio when we find a supplier who can provide kiln-dried blanks of sufficient quality, and when the wood itself demonstrates something worth turning.
Kiln Dried, Individually Evaluated
Every piece of wood we acquire arrives kiln dried to the appropriate moisture content for stable turning. This is not a shortcut — it is a foundation condition. A bowl finished from green or improperly dried wood will check, warp, or shift as it ages in your home. We will not turn it.
Before a single cut is made, each blank is evaluated again in the studio. The chatoyance is checked under multiple light angles. The figure is mapped across the face. The grain direction is assessed to understand how the turning will expose or suppress what the wood is hiding. We begin with a general idea and change it as the wood is exposed — following what the grain presents rather than imposing a form the wood was not built to support.
Only then does the lathe start.
12 to 24 Hours of Hands-On Work
Shaping a bowl at Talking Wood Studio takes between 12 and 24 hours of hands-on work across multiple days — and that span does not include the 30-day cure period built into the middle of the process. There are no shortcuts in any of it.
01 — Selection and Grading
The blank is assessed a final time before mounting. Figure orientation is marked; the lathe axis is set to maximize the visual center of the finished piece, not to optimize material yield. The grade is confirmed and recorded.
02 — Turning and Form Refinement
The blank is mounted on the lathe and turned to its finished form across a single continuous process. Proportions are established, figure is exposed across the full turning surface, and wall thickness is brought to its finished dimension. Foot and rim profiles are defined. This is where the specific form of the sculpture is resolved: the relationship between height, opening diameter, and shoulder curve that determines how the piece will occupy space in a room. The rough form is assessed before the final shape is committed — taking time here prevents resolving a form before the wood has had a chance to show itself fully.
03 — Initial Lathe Sanding (Up to Six Grits)
With the piece still on the lathe, initial sanding is performed through up to six progressive grits. Working at speed gives each grit consistent, even contact across the full form, removing tool marks and refining the surface in a way hand sanding at this stage cannot replicate. The piece comes off the lathe for the last time at the end of this step.
04 — Tung Oil Application and 30-Day Cure
Tung oil is applied by hand and worked into the surface. The piece then rests for a minimum of 30 days. Tung oil does not simply dry; it polymerizes inside the wood, forming a flexible, food-safe film within the fiber itself. Cutting this cure short produces a surface that looks finished but has not yet reached its structural potential. The 30-day minimum is not a preference; it is the chemistry. The figure's full depth becomes visible for the first time at this step.
05 — Iron Branding, Serial Numbering, and Documentation
The maker's mark is applied with a custom iron brand — a permanent impression in the foot of the sculpture that cannot be removed or replicated. The piece receives its serial number, recorded in the Certificate of Authenticity along with the species, dimensions and weight. The certificate is issued to the collector as a standalone record of provenance, that includes photographs of the piece from four angles — a visual record sufficient to identify the original work across any future change of ownership.
06 — Secondary Hand Sanding (Seven Grits)
After the oil has fully cured, the piece is hand sanded through seven additional grits. This stage is slower and more deliberate than the initial lathe sanding. Working by hand allows the sander to follow the figure, ease any raised grain from the oil application, and bring the surface to the precise smoothness the wax step requires. Potentially thirteen grits total across both stages.
07 — High-Speed Buffing
The piece is remounted on the lathe and buffed at high speed. The friction and heat generated at speed burnish the cured oil surface, closing the grain further and bringing out the full depth of the figure. This is the step where chatoyance — the light-shifting shimmer in highly figured wood — becomes fully visible for the first time.
08 — Food-Safe Carnauba Wax, Applied at Speed
Food-safe carnauba wax is applied to the spinning piece at high speed. The friction heats the wax as it contacts the surface, driving it into the grain and hardening it on contact rather than simply sitting on top. The result is a dense, durable surface that has reached its peak: fully saturated with oil, sealed with wax, and finished to a depth that handling will only improve over time.
Every piece is the work of Ben Balzer, the studio's founder and sole artisan. No CNC machines. No mass-production tooling. No reproductions.

The provenance of a Talking Wood Studio piece runs from a global search — across a sourcing network built over years, spanning multiple continents — through a highly selective material evaluation, into a solo studio in the foothills of Georgia's Blue Ridge Mountains, and finally to your home.
Each piece arrives with a signed Certificate of Authenticity documenting the wood species, dimensions, serial number, date of completion, and photographs.
This documentation is not ceremonial. It is the record that travels with the piece through its life. As the bowl moves from its first owner to the next, the certificate and the mark communicate what words can only approximate: that this piece was made by one person, from one block of wood that could not be replicated, on a day that will not come again.
That is what provenance means here. And it begins with a search.
